Activities

Cooler days, changing colours and a quieter side of the mountains. Fall in Whistler is made for exploring. Discover our favourite seasonal activities, local events and places to eat, drink and unwind.

1. Explore Whistler's Fall Hiking Trails

Cooler temperatures and quieter trails make early fall an incredible time to explore Whistler on foot. For something easy, take a walk around Lost Lake, explore the trails surrounding Green Lake, or follow a section of the Valley Trail between Whistler's neighbourhoods, lakes and parks.

If you're looking for something more challenging, the Sea to Sky is home to some spectacular hikes including Rainbow Lake, Train Wreck and Cheakamus Lake. Higher-elevation trails can see snow surprisingly early, so always check current trail and weather conditions before heading out and be prepared for quickly changing mountain weather.

Outpost Tip: September is particularly good for hiking, with cooler temperatures, fewer people on the trails and long enough days for bigger adventures.

2. Catch the Last Days of Alpine Sightseeing

Visiting in September? There may still be time to head into the alpine.

Whistler Mountain's Summer Alpine Experience continues into September, giving visitors the chance to ride the gondola into the mountains and explore Whistler's alpine scenery before winter operations begin.

It's one of the best ways to see the transition between seasons, when the valley is still green and gold while the surrounding peaks may already be receiving their first dusting of snow. Keep in mind that fall mountain operations are limited, so check current operating dates before planning your day.

3. Ride Whistler Mountain Bike Park

Ski season might be approaching, but bike season isn't finished yet.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park continues operating into October, making fall an excellent time to squeeze in a few final laps. Cooler riding temperatures and classic fall conditions make September and early October a favourite time of year for many riders.

Not ready for downhill? Rent a bike or e-bike and explore Whistler's extensive Valley Trail, or head to the cross-country trails around Lost Lake.

4. Walk or Bike the Valley Trail

Sometimes the simplest activities are the best. Whistler's 46-kilometre Valley Trail connects neighbourhoods, lakes and parks throughout the resort and is one of our favourite ways to explore town without a car.

Make a morning of it and stop at Lost Lake, Green Lake, Alta Lake or Rainbow Park, or grab a coffee and take a leisurely walk as the leaves begin to change.

It's free, accessible from locations throughout Whistler and particularly beautiful on a crisp fall morning.

5. Zip Through the Forest

Whistler's adventures don't stop when summer ends. Ziplining is available throughout the year and is a great option if you're looking to add a little adrenaline to your fall getaway. Fly through the coastal rainforest, cross suspension bridges and experience a completely different perspective of Whistler's mountains and forests.

It's also a good activity for those unpredictable fall days when the weather can't quite decide what it's doing.

6. Slow Down With a Spa Day

Grey skies and cooler temperatures provide the perfect excuse for a spa day.

Spend a few hours moving between hot pools, cold plunges and quiet relaxation spaces surrounded by Whistler's forest. Add a massage or treatment and you've got the ideal recovery day after hiking or biking. Fall is all about embracing the slower side of Whistler, and this is one of the best ways to do it.

7. Discover Whistler's Arts & Culture

Not every Whistler adventure needs hiking boots. Take a walk through the Village and discover Whistler's cultural side.

Visit the Audain Art Museum, learn about the history and culture of the Squamish Nation and Lil'wat Nation at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre, or follow Whistler's Cultural Connector between galleries, museums and public art. It's an especially good option for rainy fall afternoons.

8. Eat Your Way Around Whistler

One of the biggest perks of visiting during fall? Dining season.

Whistler's restaurants often introduce special menus and offers during the quieter months, making fall an excellent time to try somewhere you've had on your list. Book a long dinner, find a cosy cocktail bar or make an evening of exploring the Village's restaurants.

And if you're visiting later in the season, keep an eye out for Cornucopia, Whistler's annual celebration of food and drink.

9. Experience Vallea Lumina

As the evenings get darker earlier, fall is an atmospheric time to experience Vallea Lumina.

The multimedia night walk takes you through an illuminated forest using light, sound and storytelling to transform the trees around you. Wrap up warm, grab a hot drink afterwards and make a night of it.

10. Go Fishing

Fall brings a completely different fishing season to the Sea to Sky.

Guided fishing trips are available around Whistler and the surrounding area, with local guides able to choose locations based on the season, weather and current conditions. Even if you've never picked up a rod before, it's a peaceful way to spend a morning surrounded by some of BC's most spectacular scenery.

11. Explore Whistler's Fall Events

Whistler's event calendar doesn't stop when summer ends. September, October and November bring sporting events, food and drink celebrations, arts and cultural events and the build-up to another winter season.

Depending on when you're visiting, look out for events including the Whistler Writers Festival, Cornucopia and Whistler Film Festival, alongside smaller community events happening throughout the Village. Check our Whistler Events Calendar before your stay to see what's happening while you're here.

Why Visit Whistler in Fall?

Whistler in fall feels different. The pace slows down. Trails become quieter. Restaurant tables become easier to find.

Mornings are crisp, the mountains start collecting their first snow and there are still plenty of ways to spend the day outside. It's also the perfect season for travellers who want a little bit of everything: adventure in the morning, a long lunch in the Village, a walk through the forest and a hot tub waiting at the end of the day.
